Tarte Cosmetics - Digital Live Portraits
Client: Tarte Cosmetics
Project: Digital live drawing / personalized face charts
Location: Prague
My role: Live digital illustrator
Live drawing
I was invited by Tarte Cosmetics France to create personalized digital portraits for guests during their event in Prague.
The idea was to reinterpret the traditional beauty face chart in a more personal and playful way. Instead of creating the portraits live while guests waited, I photographed each customer, let them continue shopping and enjoying the event, and then drew their portrait digitally on my iPad.
The Brief
Tarte wanted each guest to receive a personalized face chart in the form of a digital portrait. The illustrations were created on an iPad so the finished artwork could be shared quickly and easily with each guest via AirDrop.
The format needed to feel personal while also working within the fast pace of a live beauty event, where guests were moving between shopping, product discovery and other activities.
A Different Approach to Live Drawing
Rather than asking customers to sit still while I drew them, I took a reference photo and let them continue with their shopping experience.
This made the process much more natural for the event. Guests did not need to wait in one place, while I could still take the time to capture their features and create an individual portrait.
Once the illustration was finished, I sent it directly to the customer digitally.
Illustration as Part of the Event Experience
For me, this project was an interesting example of how live illustration does not always have to mean drawing directly in front of someone from start to finish.
By combining photography, digital drawing and instant sharing, the illustration could fit naturally into the flow of the event without interrupting the customer experience.
The result was a personalized digital souvenir that guests could take away from their time with Tarte Cosmetics.
