Sense of Belonging
Almost every person wears a mask sometimes to blend in with people they are surrounded with. Throughout our periods of life, we are all going through meeting new people and socializing, which shapes us and our identity. When I was younger, I always wanted to be likeable to my peers. I forced myself to do things I didn’t want to do or to pretend to like things that I didn’t like. I was afraid that if I didn’t like what others liked, I would be left out. I’m glad that at this moment, I’m surrounded with people that like me for who I am and don’t make me feel like I have to pretend to be someone I’m not.
This illustration sends a message to all those people who feel like in a cage sometimes and are afraid to show the society who they really are. I just want to say - don’t be afraid to show your true self, to speak up for yourself and to allow yourself to take off your mask. Eventually in life, you will find the right people who understand and accept you for you.
The artwork is inspired by Vietnamese traditional clothes and Vietnamese theatre masks.
