Mixit - An Illustrated World of Matcha

Client: Mixit
My role: Concept development, sketches and packaging illustration

An Illustrated World of Matcha

Mixit approached me to create an illustrated identity for their matcha products, beginning with the Matcha Latte Mixitka. The aim was to develop a visual language that could grow beyond the first product, connecting future additions to the range through a shared illustrated world.

The Brief

The illustrations needed to give the matcha range its own character while working within Mixit’s existing branding. For the first product, the brief called for Asian-inspired motifs and a predominantly green palette, while retaining the established Mixitka lettering and leaving space for the protein label. My role was to develop the illustrations around these elements, bringing a new story to a familiar packaging format.

01 — Matcha Latte Mixitka

Exploring the possibilities

I prepared three different sketch directions for the first product. One explored a tea set surrounded by mountains, tea leaves and cherry blossoms. Another introduced miniature figures in kimono interacting with oversized matcha vessels. The third focused on women working in tea fields, framed by leaves and flowers. These sketches offered different ways to bring together matcha, nature and a playful sense of storytelling.

Working through several compositions helped me explore how the illustration could sit alongside the product name and packaging information. Rather than moving straight into a finished drawing, the sketches established different possibilities for the visual identity.

A miniature matcha world

The final illustration developed the concept of small figures tending to matcha. Oversized bowls and tea-making utensils become part of their surroundings, creating a little world within the wrapper. This playful relationship between people and objects was already central to the second sketch direction.

Green hills and tea leaves connect the scene, while pink blossoms, blue clothing and warm golden tones add contrast. The illustration unfolds around the lettering, with small details to discover across the packaging.

This first design established the recurring elements of the range: botanical details, tea-making tools, miniature characters and landscapes that blend the everyday with the imaginary.

02 — BIO Matcha Chai Coconut Latte

Building on the first illustration

For the second product, I carried the established visual language into a new format. The challenge was to make the Matcha Chai Coconut Latte feel connected to the Mixitka while giving it a composition and story of its own.

Again, I prepared three sketch directions. The first stayed close to the original Mixitka illustration, rearranging familiar elements around a glass of latte. The second imagined a miniature landscape growing from the top of the drink. The third placed the glass, ingredients and surrounding scenery within a postage-stamp-style frame.

A landscape in a glass

The final illustration follows the second direction. A glass of matcha latte becomes the foundation for a miniature world, with mountains rising above its rim. Cinnamon, star anise, tea leaves and cherry blossoms become parts of the landscape, while a waterfall in the colour of the drink flows down one side.

Small figures bring a sense of scale to the scene: a cinnamon stick becomes a place to stand, and the glass becomes something much larger than an everyday object. The ingredients are not simply pictured beside the drink—they help build the world around it.

The green palette, pink blossoms and playful changes in scale connect the illustration to the first product, while the central glass and mountain landscape give the sachet its own identity.

From One Illustration to a Product Family

The same visual language also appears on the Matcha Granola packaging. Here, leaves, blossoms, clouds and a matcha whisk create a more open decorative composition around the product photograph and lettering.

Together, the products show how a collection can feel connected without repeating the same illustration on every pack. A detailed miniature scene can lead one design, while individual motifs carry the identity into another format.

What began with a single Mixitka became an illustrated world that could grow with the range—giving each product its own story while keeping a recognizable connection between them.
